  • This week we farewelled the lanky and likeable Jimmy Hannan who passed away at the age of 84, Jimmy was a Gold Logie winner in 1965 and he hosted many popular TV shows of the 1960’s including the Jimmy Hannan Show and Saturday Date which featured such rising stars as Olivia Newton-John and Billy Thorpe.He hit the charts during the surf rock era in the early sixties with his good-time surf party pop hit Beach Ball , which we feature this week in our popular Years Ago section.

  • Jimmy Hannan wasn’t the only performer to jump on the surfing boardwagon in the 1960’s, it was an international genre originating from California’s west coast, and in an extended Years Ago post this week, we remember others who rode the crest of a surfing music wave of success here in Australia – Little Pattie, The Delltones, Digger Revell, and even Sir Robert Helpmann! In a future edition of 4TR we will explore the fascinating back story to the creation of Australia’s most famous surf rock song, Bombora by The Atlantics.

  • Rick Springfield was a very successful performer in the USA throughout the power pop era in the 1980’s, taking no less than six songs into the US top 10 in that decade. Because he relocated to the States very early in his career in 1971, we tend to forget that he was a local, who sold over 17 million records throughout his career, and has starred in popular TV series and movies as well – this week, in Special Feature, we revisit his USA and Australian #1 hit Jessie’s Girl from 1981.
